Vagabond is a Halcyon 27 auxiliary sailing cruiser
designed by Alan Buchanan and completed by Offshore Yachts, Royston Herts. in
November 1971. Hull no. H27/P59. LOA 27ft, LWL 20 ft 3 in, Beam 7ft 8 in ,
Draft 4 ft. Estimated tonnage: Gross 4.10, Register 3.88, TM 6.5 tons. The
current owner bought her in November 2002 from a couple who had just completed a
circumnavigation in her. Before starting they fitted a stainless steel mast
support structure, new sails, an Aerogen wind generator and Furlex genoa roller
reefing system. They also fitted 6mm stainless steel rigging (2mm oversize) and
a new mast crane for the final leg home.
In August 2002 the current owner purchased Vagabond as
a ‘retirement project’. The boat was transported overland from Portsmouth to
Creran Marine Barcaldine and over the next few years the owner carried out a
number of renovations and additions. The underwater hull was abraded with 40
grit and then Gelshielded with seven coats. No osmosis was found before or since
and this treatment has been proved to be very satisfactory. Interior work
included re-facing all removable interior woodwork with white formica laminate;
boxing in (and padding!) the stainless steel mast-support girders; re-building
bulkhead panels and doors; and painting and insulating the rest of the interior.
In addition, and more importantly, the existing Volvo 2001
was replaced with a new Beta BZ482 13.5hp engine and alternator with new
stern-gear and propeller to match. Two 87amp hour batteries were fitted and
re-located more accessibly under the chart table. Eberspacher ducted air heating
was also added. A new Plastimo Neptune cooker was fitted and the gas supply and
storage modernised to meet current safety requirements. A new depth meter/log
was fitted as well as a GPS repeater in the cockpit. A NASA battery condition
meter has also been purchased but not yet fully installed. Air horns and an
extension cockpit speaker have also been fitted and the Aerogen received new
bearings in 2009.
On deck, the original spray hood was replaced with a solid
structure with an integral garage for the main hatch. This gives substantially
more usable deck area.. New steaming lights were fitted and a Lofrans Royale
anchor windlass installed on the foredeck
